Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences Certificate in Health Sciences

The Certificate in Health Sciences (CertHSc) is a one year foundation programme aimed at bridging Māori and Pacifc students from secondary school or from the community into programmes offered by the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences.

The overall objective of the CertHSc is to increase the number of Māori and Pacific students completing courses in healthcare and health sciences so that they will eventually enter the workforce as successful health professionals.

For further details, including information on eligibility, application details, course structure, and prescription, View our undergraduate programme information.

There is also a wide range of support services available for CertHSc students:

Camp/Wānanga

The Māori and Pacific Admission Scheme (MAPAS) provides a  marae based camp within the North Island, held in February.  It is compulsory every new student in the Bachelor of Health Sciences, Bachelor of Nursing, Bachelor of Pharmacy, Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery Part II and Certificate in Health Sciences to attend.

The MAPAS wānanga is an opportunity for you to whakawhanaungatanga - meet other students that will share your MAPAS experience. In addition, you will get to build an open working relationship with the MAPAS staff who will support you through your studies. The wānanga is filled with a range of activities and team building/bonding exercises, and past participants have found the wānanga both fun and enlightening.

CertHSc orientation

Following the wānanga, an orientation is provided. This will be held prior to the start of the semester.  The orientation introduces new students to the CertHSc programme, the University and Tāmaki Campus, City and Grafton Campuses. A full programme is provided so students have all the information they need to navigate both the course and University life successfully.

Cohort lunches

This is a time for our course coordinators to catch up with students. The lunches take place two to three times a year, and are a good time to receive feedback, answer questions and update students on any changes within the programme.

Health Careers Day

A highlight of the MAORIHTH 19H paper, Academic and Professional Development, is the CertHSc Health Careers Day. The careers day brings in Māori and Pacific health professionals, Māori and Pacific healthcare organisations and a number of educational institutions to meet with the CertHSc students specifically. It is an opportunity to explore potential pathways in health.

CertHSc Cultural Wānanga

The cultural wānanga is a very successful part of our programme. The cultural wānanga/fono is a compulsory weekend and includes an overnight stay. The wānanga/fono will be used to provide students with a way to actively and intensively learn about aspects of traditional Māori and Pacific culture.

The weekend begins with a pōwhiri on to Waipapa marae on the Saturday morning. A number of interactive workshops are held, and students prepare a cultural dance performance and a traditional feast to be shared at the conclusion of the weekend.
