Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences MEDSCI 142 - enrolment policy

Owing to insufficient accommodation and restrictions on staffing, there will be a limitation on the number of students who can be enrolled in 2012.  Students wishing to enrol are likely to fall into one of the following two categories.

Enrolment / Waitlist categories

1.

Students who have not previously attended this university.

Students who have accepted a place in a programme for which MEDSCI 142 is a compulsory course will be given priority. These programmes and plans include:

  • Bachelor of Engineering - Biomedical Engineering specialisation
  • Bachelor of Health Science
  • Bachelor of Nursing
  • Bachelor of Pharmacy
  • Bachelor of Science - Biomedical Science specialisation
  • Bachelor of Science - Sport and Exercise Science major
  • Bachelor of Science - Medicinal Chemistry specialisation (dependent on academic ability)
  • Bachelor of Technology - Biotechnology specialisation (dependent on academic ability)
  • Bachelor of Technology - Medical Physics and Imaging Technology specialisation (dependent on academic ability)

Availability permitting, priority may also be given to students active in the following plans:

  • Bachelor of Science - Pharmacology major
  • Bachelor of Science - Physiology major

We will attempt to offer a place to all first-year students who wish to attend, who meet the academic requirements of the course, irrespective of what programme (degree) they are enrolled in. However this will depend on how many places remain towards the begining of the second semester for 2012. At this time we will offer any remaining places to students who have lodged a concession.

Grade Point Equivalent (GPE) is a figure between 0 and 9 which is assigned to you by the university when you commence studies here, and is a measure of your academic performance at school or at another university. Once you have been at The University of Auckland for a semester or more, then your grades are used to calculate a Grade Point Average (GPA) which replaces the GPE.

2.

Students who have attended this university for a year or more (including those who have failed MEDSCI 142 once and wish to have a second attempt).

Students in this group may gain a place depending on their GPA and on the programme they have been admitted into.

Students with a GPA above 4 who are active in a programme listed above will be given priority over those with a lower GPA. Students who have a GPA below 4 will be required to apply for a concession.

Those students that have been accepted into the programmes of BNurs, BPharm, BHSc, BTech (specialising in Biotechnology or Medical Physics) and BSc (specialising in Biomedical Science, Medicinal Chemistry or Sports Science) will be given priority over those in other programmes.

If you are required to lodge a concession, then you will be ranked by GPE/GPA for enrolment sometime in July 2012. The co-ordinator will enrol as many from the concession waitlist as possible. This will depend on the number of places that are available at the time. If you are on the concession waitlist and we have a place to offer you then we will contact you through your official University e-mail address (YourUPI@aucklanduni.ac.nz - e.g. jdoe007@aucklanduni.ac.nz) . You need to check this e-mail address regularly.  If we can't contact you, we can't enrol you, and your place may be offered to someone else.
