Theresa (Terry) Fleming is a lecturer in the Department of Paediatrics: Child and Youth Health and the Department of Psychological Medicine.
At the moment I am working on 3 major projects:
1) SPARX youth e-therapy, this is a computerised programme for dealing with depression. We've tested this in a large RCT and several smaller studies, and it seems that it works very well. We've been awarded UN and UNESCO prizes for this work, as it has real potential for increasing access to mental health services for large numbers of young people. I'm now working on a version of SPARX which focuses more on life skills than on depression. We are working on many national and international collabourations about youth e-therapy and there are some great opportunities for improving youth mental health and for reserach in this area. www.sparx.org.nz
2. YOUTH2000 This is New Zealands largest youth health data set. It includes surveys with 8500 to 10 000 secondary school students in 2001, 2007 and now 2012. It's carried out on tablets, investigates issues from culture, to community, to personal health. It allows us to see how well we are doing for teenagers in NZ and how things are changing. I'm currently the chair of the Adolescent Health Reseach Group (AHRG) (which plans and carries out the surveys). The AHRG welcomes other researchers and students to collabourate with us, to make good use of this data. http://www.fmhs.auckland.ac.nz/faculty/ahrg/
3. Teaching at the University of Auckland. This year I'm teaching a post-graduate paper in youth health leadership. It's great to teach because it tends to be small groups of people doing new things, we get to grow a great class, work out what looks like really useful things to do & start doing them. - http://www.fmhs.auckland.ac.nz/faculty/postgrad/subjects/youthhealth.aspx
