Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences Guidelines for Summer Research Studentship application
  1. A student may apply for only one project. 
  2. Eligibility:
    • Students are eligible from second to fourth years of study. Medical students eligible only in second and third years of study.
    • A minimum B+ average grade equivalent to a GPA of 6 is required.
    • Each student is eligible for a maximum of two summer research scholarships during their period of undergraduate study.
    • Students enrolled in a postgraduate programme (Hons, Masters, PhD) are not eligible.
  3. A supervisor may only supervise a maximum of two projects. This is to ensure that a student receives adequate supervision.
  4. One project – one student. A large project may not be split into two or three components. Each student must have a distinct project.
  5. Each application should be an individual effort by the student. Applications may be marked down if it is apparent that the supervisor has written most of the application. Submit one single sided, non stapled copy of the application form by 23 August to the Research Deposit Box, Level 1, Bldg 505, Grafton campus.
  6. Applicants who do not have the approval/signature of their supervisor and head of department will not be considered.
  7. Judges score the applications on the available criteria. The scores are averaged and the top percentage is awarded summer studentships.
  8. The grant is $5,000 and is normally payable for the period December - February inclusive. Actual starting and finishing dates should be discussed with your supervisor.
  9. Payment will be made in two instalments. The first payment ($3,000) will be made when the project commences before the Christmas break. The final payment is made ($2,000) when a satisfactory report is handed in by the student.
  10. Applications (one copy, single-sided, not stapled to be submitted) must be made on the official application form (either general or Paykel) and must be written by the student within the space available. A copy of the applicant's academic results to date must accompany the application.
  11. Successful applicants will be required to observe the hours and conditions of work required by their supervisor; failure to do this will result in forfeiture of the grant.
  12. Reports to be made at the end of the project and in project working time, must be the work of the student, and should follow the stated report guidelines. The language must be aimed at a general readership, unlikely to be familiar with the terminology used in specialist academic or hospital departments. Some reports (recommended by supervisors) will be eligible for the Wallath Prize. Final closing date for reports is 24 February 2012.
