The Postgraduate Diploma in Health Sciences in Sports Medicine is primarily aimed
at general practitioners in New Zealand who wish to increase their expertise in
treating athletes in their practice.
Doctors training in this field in Australia may apply but admission is contingent
upon their being able to meet the practical requirements, including travel to New
Zealand as necessary. The diploma consists of theoretical courses and a practical
course, which requires the practitioner to work with patients, as well as being
attached to a contact sports team (registration with either the New Zealand or Australian
Medical Council, as well as appropriate work placements are the responsibility of
the student, but has to be approved by the Programme Coordinator).
Why study sports medicine?
Healthcare providers covered by the New Zealand Health Practitioners Competency Assurance Act who have an interest in sports medicine and are not registered medical practitioners are able to take the theoretical courses in this subject (POPLPRAC 743, 744, 745, and 746), towards a
Postgraduate Certificate in Health Sciences in Sports Medicine or incorporate some of these courses into another programme of study.
