The Department of Paediatrics aims to promote the health and well-being of children
and young people. Based at Starship, Middlemore, Auckland City and Waikato Hospitals,
the department is also involved in teaching and promoting child health at a community
level. Renowned for its strengths in researching areas such as cot death, infectious
diseases, asthma, diabetes and endocrinology, the department has an international
reputation for the quality of its research. The department contributes to both undergraduate
and postgraduate health professional education.
The department offers a Diploma in Paediatrics, which is aimed at medical practitioners
registered and working in New Zealand and requires applicants to have six months paediatric
training before the end of the calendar year. Diploma candidates undergo a programme
of practical training and formal education over a period of 12 months.
