Research in the department is broadly based with an emphasis on tissue repair, tissue engineering, genetics and diseases of the eye. The department has an emphasis on translational research, combining laboratory science with clinical research. Opportunities are available to undertake research focused on experimental cell and molecular biology and tissue biology, through to clinically linked studies of specific eye diseases. The department has a high publication rate and student research is aimed at publication in international journals. There are no named science specialisations in ophthalmology but postgradudate students are encouraged to take courses in a wide range of specialisations in the School of Medicine and the School of Medical Sciences.
