Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences Postgraduate Diploma in Health Sciences in Advanced Nursing

The Postgraduate Diploma in Health Sciences (PGDipHSc), specialising in Advanced Nursing, is aimed at registered nurses seeking to advance their knowledge and skills. It is intended to give nurses the core generic skills and knowledge essential for advanced nursing practice in a specialist area, and preparation for research. The intent is that the postgraduate diploma will allow the nurse to develop competencies associated with advanced nursing practice.

Students who have completed the Postgraduate Certificate in Health Sciences in Advanced Nursing may apply to credit the 60 pts to the diploma, and then undertake an additional 60 points in courses to complete the diploma. 

This specialisation is offered by the School of Nursing, and is offered in a Flexible or distance learning format.

Students wishing to complete the PGDipHSc in Advanced Nursing specilisation are required to enrol in and complete the following courses, depending on the desired stream desired.  If a student intends to proceed to a masters programme, a research methods course should be included. 

Stream 1: Advanced Nursing

          60 points from:

  • NURSING 706 - Principles of Pharmacology and Pharmacokinetics (15 Points)
  • NURSING 714 - Nursing Practicum 1 (15 Points)
  • NURSING 716 - Primary Health Care of Children and Adolescents (15 Points)
  • NURSING 719 - Specialty Nursing Knowledge and Practice (15 Points)
  • NURSING 720 - Evidence-based Nursing (15 Points)
  • NURSING 730 - Knowledge / Science in Specialty Nursing (30 Points)
  • NURSING 742 - Biological Science for Practice (30 Points)
  • NURSING 773 - Advanced Assessment and Clinical Reasoning (30 Points)
  • or other courses approved by the Head of School of Nursing

    and 60 points from courses listed in the Master of Nursing Schedule.

Stream 2: Gerontology

          60 points from: 

  • NURSING 720 - Evidence-based Nursing (15 Points)
  • NURSING 773 - Advanced Assessment and Clinical Reasoning (30 Points)
  • POPLHLTH 749 - Biology of Ageing (15 Points)
  • POPLPRAC 725 - Principles of Gerontology (15 Points) or
  • POPLPRAC 727 - Mental Health in Old Age (15 Points) or
  • POPLPRAC 756 - Adult Rehabilitation Studies (30 Points)  

and 60 points from courses listed in the Master of Nursing Schedule.

Stream 3: Palliative Care

          60 points from: 

  • NURSING 720 - Evidence-based Nursing (15 Points)
  • NURSING 773 - Advanced Assessment and Clinical Reasoning (30 Points)
  • POPLPRAC 722 - Foundations of Clinical Symptom Management in Palliative Care (15 Points)
  • POPLPRAC 719 - Essentials of Palliative Care (15 Points) or
  • POPLPRAC 720 - Psychosocial Issues in Palliative Care (15 Points) or
  • POPLPRAC 721 - Reflective Practice in Palliative Care (15 Points) or
  • POPLPRAC 723 - Clinical Symptom Management in Palliative Care 2 (15 Points) or
  • POPLPRAC 724 - Child and Adolescent Palliative Care (15 Points) or

  • NURSING 776 - Assessment and Clinical Decision Making in MHN (30 Points)
  • NURSING 777 - Advanced Practice in Mental Health Nursing (30 Points)
