Without statistics, the interpretation of our experiment results would become extremely difficult. Correctly designed tests, followed by right analyses of the data, would provide the scientific basis for our statistically significant results not likely to have occurred purely by chance.
In this coming seminar, Dr Jiang from the Department of Statistics will show you how to do IT properly.
Abstract: A properly planned and executed clinical trial is a powerful experimental technique for assessing the efficacy and safety of intervention(s) against a control in human beings.
Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) are considered the “gold standard” in determining clinical effectiveness, and such designs are increasingly being used in the evaluations of non-clinical interventions. The role of statistics in clinical trials design and analysis is acknowledged as essential in the ICH guideline for Good Clinical Practice (GCP).
In this talk Dr Jiang will provide a general guidance on the standard trial design, statistical analysis and reports with some focus on the principles of statistical methodology. Alternative designs that are widely used in population-based interventions will also be discussed.
Dr Jiang gained her first degree from Beijing Normal University in 1994, and completed her MSc and PhD degrees in Statistics at the University of Auckland. She joined the NIHI (formerly Clinical Trials Research Unit) in 2005 as the principal statistician and study co-investigator in Nutrition and Physical Activity Programme across a number of research projects.
As a senior member of the SCC, she also provides statistical consultancy to external organizations including advice on study design, data monitoring, statistical analysis and reporting, and expert review. Dr Jiang has a particular interest in population health. A major focus of her research is designing innovative pragmatic intervention trials to improve population health in New Zealand and other countries.
Her current research areas include nutrition and physical activity, smoking cessation, cluster randomized trial design, national survey design and analysis, Phase II/III drug trials, case-control studies with response-selective sampling and missing data problems.
