This symposium is organised by School of Population Health (University of Auckland) and Community Action Youth and Drugs (CAYAD).
Speakers From: Massey University – Massey’s Centre for Social and Health Outcomes Research and Evaluation, and Te Roopu Whariki, in conjunction with New Zealand Police, have been tracking methamphetamine use, and price, for a number of years. They’ll give feedback about the latest data relative to New Zealand at large, and Auckland in particular.
New Zealand Police – the Police, in conjunction with their border control colleagues at NZ Customs are on the frontline as regards trying to reduce the supply of methamphetamine. A Police spokesperson will give an update on where things are at in Auckland from their perspective.
Auckland Regional Methamphetamine Working Group – early in his term of office Mayor Len Brown established an Auckland Taskforce aimed at combating the manufacture, distribution, and use of methamphetamine in the region. This has developed into a cross-sectoral multi-disciplinary team. Team members will report on the four workstreams of effort that they have developed to create an Auckland strategy to counter the harms from methamphetamine.
Stellar Trust – its no secret that methamphetamine is ruthless in terms of impacting on families, and family members regardless of income or social status. Paul Holmes has fronted as the face of Stellar Trust and the challenges faced by Paul’s family are public fare. Stellar Trust is an Auckland-based initiative. Representatives from Stellar will explain where they are at and what they intend to do for Auckland.
New Zealand Drug Foundation – NZDF have led the way in fostering debate about drug use in general and methamphetamine in particular. They have developed Methelp as a first level response to individuals and families seeking help for methrelated issues. They’ll update you on where they reckon we are at and what needs to be done.
