Teaching
The core purpose of the Learning Technology Unit
(LTU) is to support The Faculty of Medical
and Health Sciences in its flexible and distance teaching needs. We achieve this aim through working with all five schools within the
faculty across a range of projects from converting face-to-face
courses for fully distance delivery to creating animated case scenarios for undergraduate
medical students.
Some of our work comes from our teaching with technology
project round
which is run
every October. During
this round faculty members can submit an expression of interest
for a distance or flexible learning project. The LTU also provides
individualised support
for lecturers who want to use technologies in their teaching together with
information technology workshops
for the faculty. We also teach ClinEd711, eLearning and Clinical Education,
as part of the
Masters in Clinical Education.

Research
We are active in
research and contributing to the body of knowledge concerning teaching with
technologies in
a pedagogically principled way. The Learning Technology Unit has
presented at both national and international conferences and is gradually building
upon early research work with journal articles and book chapters. We see this scholarly
activity as a necessary condition for furthering our understanding of appropriate
ways to use technologies to enhance teaching and learning.
Additionally, the LTU contributes to a number of significant
faculty projects.
Presently, the LTU is involved in faculty, governmental and Health Research Council
(HRC) funded projects aiming to improve the health of New Zealanders. We are also playing a central
role with the Associate Dean of Education and the Centre for Medical and Health
Sciences
in a faculty project to create a teaching e-portfolio space
for the professional development of lecturers.
