About Auckland - the City of Sails

Auckland, the largest and most accessible city in New Zealand, has a population of approximately 1,200,000. Known affectionately as the City of Sails, Auckland is situated on a narrow isthmus between the Waitemata Harbour, which leads out to the Pacific Ocean, and the Manukau Harbour, which leads out to the Tasman Sea.

The climate is warm (average winter temperature 13°C, average summer temperature 22°C) with a moderately high rainfall. Auckland is also the home of The University of Auckland, New Zealand’s top university, which ranks among the top 50 universities in the world.

Further information on Auckland can be found at New Zealand's information network website.

District Health Boards in the greater Auckland region

The city is served by three large general hospitals: Auckland City Hospital, which also incorporates the Starship Children’s Hospital and the National Women’s Hospital, North Shore Hospital and Middlemore Hospital.

The University of Auckland’s Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences is adjacent to the Auckland City Hospital and close to the centre of the city.

There are four District Health Boards with teaching hospitals associated with The University of Auckland’s School of Medicine. Three of these offer elective placements.
