About Auckland - the City of Sails
Auckland, the largest and most accessible city in New Zealand, has a population
of approximately 1,200,000. Known affectionately as the City of Sails, Auckland
is situated on a narrow isthmus between the Waitemata Harbour, which leads out
to the Pacific Ocean, and the Manukau Harbour, which leads out to the Tasman
Sea.
The climate is warm (average winter temperature 13°C, average summer temperature
22°C) with a moderately high rainfall. Auckland is also the home of The
University of Auckland, New Zealand’s top university, which ranks among the top
50 universities in the world.

District Health Boards in the greater Auckland region
The city is served by three large general hospitals: Auckland City Hospital,
which also incorporates the Starship Children’s Hospital and the National
Women’s Hospital, North Shore Hospital and Middlemore Hospital.
The University of Auckland’s Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences is adjacent
to the Auckland City Hospital and close to the centre of the city.
There are four District Health Boards with teaching hospitals associated with
The University of Auckland’s School of Medicine. Three of these offer elective
placements.
