Course structure
MBCHB 211: PCCS1
Clinical skills learning in the Clinical Skills Centre (CSC) is an integrated part of the PCCS1 course and also makes explicit links with other MBChB3 courses.
MBCHB 312: PCCS2
A number of components of teaching come together under PCCS2, delivered in
different settings but covering the same core skills and learning:
- Sessions in the CSC (mainly semester 1)
- Sessions in the Advanced Clinical Skills Centre (ACSC) on the Mercy Hospital complex (mainly semester 1)

- Lectures and small groups (mainly semester 2)
- Half-day attachments in a hospital setting during semester 2 (previously called
‘Clinical Methods’)
Assessment
MBCHB 211: PCCS1
- There is no formal practical assessment of clinical examination skills;
however, the skills learnt will form the foundation for clinical skills teaching
in MBChB3.
- The material covered alongside the skills in MBChB2 is designed to
complement and reinforce learning in the core PCCS1 course and other MBChB2
courses.
- Communication skills is formally assessed with a simulated patient actor in
semester 2.
- The written examination questions for PCCS1 may include clinical skills
elements.
MBCHB 312: PCCS2
- The main practical assessment takes the form of an OSCE (Objective Structured
Clinical Examination).
- For each student this is a 30 minute practical observed exam, divided into three
10-minute stations, each with a different examiner.
- You will be assessed on clinical examination and communication skills learnt
across both years.
- The written examination questions for PCCS2 will include clinical skills
elements.
