The Centre for Medical and Health Sciences Education (CMHSE) staff contribute
towards a number of educational development activities involving staff and
students in the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences and the wider University.
The key activities of CMHSE include:
Postgraduate programmes in Clinical Education
CMHSE offers a
masters programme in Clinical Education. This online programme
has over 50 students enrolled; engaged in coursework and research. We are now developing
capacity for a doctoral programme in Health Sciences Education.
Educational research in Medical and Health Sciences
CMHSE has an established research track record in educational research and
publication. Particular strengths include workplace assessment, simulation-based
education, clinical skills, measurement scales in social sciences, evaluation research,
educational leadership and law and ethics education.
Faculty development
and service
CMHSE engages with academic staff across the faculty to build capacity in teaching
and learning and educational research. We provide seminars, short courses and workshops,
and engage in projects to promote innovation and best educational practice.
Engagement with the wider educational and
healthcare community
CMHSE staff provide educational leadership and consultancy at national and international levels
through involvement and collaboration with professional bodies, consultancies and societies.

We also offer the following:
Seminars
and workshops
Topic based informational seminars and workshops featuring innovative
or new approaches to teaching, learning and educational assessment. Presenters are
nationally and internationally recognized experts who provide practical approaches
to tackling complex issues arising in health education.
Short courses
Hands on interactive courses aimed at strengthening skills in a particular area. Courses
last from 1 to 3 days and are taught by experts in their field. Participants benefit
from a multifaceted learning approach combining useful strategies such as presentations,
discussion, design, and group activities assuring a practical and thorough understanding
of course matter.
FMHS Teaching
and
Learning Hub
This project is a collaborative project with
the Learning Technology Unit and Associate Dean (Education). It aims to enhance teaching and
learning across the Faculty through the development of a novel electronic teaching
portfolio, linking recording of teaching activities, staff development, and reporting
on teaching for such purposes as annual performance reviews, continuation and promotion.
Inter-professional Education (IPE) Working Party: comprises representatives from
the undergraduate health professions programmes, integrated care and Maori health.
The working party has produced a set of 'IPE capabilities' for inclusion in undergraduate
programmes and are developing an IPE curriculum which will involve staff and students
from across the faculty working together to embed inter-professional learning.
Maori
Health Week (MHW): is an initiative aimed at increasing awareness among second year
medical, pharmacy and nursing students of the following: 1) Health inequalities
which exist within New Zealand, in particular differences between the Maori people
and the rest of the population. 2) The culture, lifestyle, history and values of
Maori. 3) The importance of interpersonal skills which increase the likelihood of
a positive psychological experience for Maori patients.
Teach the Teacher Outreach Project: This programme is an exciting
new project for CMHSE in collaboration with the Medical Programme Directorate (FMHS).
The programme aims to provide support to busy undergraduate clinical teachers outside
of the Auckland area but can easily be adapted to postgraduate clinical teachers
and/or the Auckland region. Resources to support the programme are being developed
and will be made available online.
CMHSE is contributing to the Evaluation of the Pukawakawa (Northland) Regional
Rural Programme: this programme was introduced in 2008 for 20 fifth year medical
students who work in hospitals and the community in Northland on a specially designed
regional rural programme. The programme is designed to increase participation of
medical students in Northland health services and ultimately to encourage more doctors
to work in regional and rural medical practice.
